When shooting landscapes, I like to use a gradient filter that darkens the top of the sky and gets gradually lighter toward the ground. Just be sure to select the Save Layers check box in the Save As dialog. These file formats support layers and will keep them safe for the next time you open your image. To preserve your layers for editing down the road, save your file as a PSD or TIFF file. To manually flatten layers, choose Layer > Flatten Image. And most file formats, such as JPEG, do not support saving layers, so the simple act of saving your image as a JPEG will flatten it. If you don’t think you will need to use the layers again, you can do something called flattening, which moves all of the layers to the background layer. Depending on the number and type of layers, you could double or even triple the file size. You should know that layers increase the size of your image file. We have created a lot of layers in the last two topics, but what exactly should you do with them when you are done? Well, it all depends on whether you want to come back and work with them later.
